A disney world holiday is a charming experience for children, especially if it is their first time. As part of planning your holiday you may be considering if your children are of a suitable age to enjoy the experience of Disney. In this post we discuss exactly that and 2whether you should consider taking your children to Disney and at what ages are best.
Kids Two And Under
Without a doubt, this age group is probably the toughest age to bring to Disney World. When kids are this young it can be very hard for them to really enjoy this type of vacation. If you go during the summer, the weather is far too hot for them, the crowds will be exceptionally loud, and since kids this age usually are on a daily routine, all of this can really disrupt what they are used to. Naps they normally would take will be skipped, their meal times will be different, and even their regular bedtime will be disrupted. It’s also important to note that Disney can actually be kind of scary for kids in this age group, especially the over sized but harmless Disney characters can be frightening to kids this young.
Even though Disney does their best to cater to families with young children with complimentary child care centers with quite places for parents to feed their kids and take care of their needs, places where young kids can sit in a living room atmosphere and watch movies, plus special shops for younger kids, it’s still not going to help with the stress visiting the parks can put on parents and very young children.
Ages 3 To 5
The toddler age group can be an absolute joy when it comes to visiting Disney. When they are this age, kids are now able to recognize the different Disney characters and usually get extremely excited about seeing some of their favorites. At this age, everything that they see they think is real and this can make it extremely fun for not just them but the parents as well. To kids this age, Disney is a kids imagination come to life as well as all of the movies and cartoons they’ve seen coming to life right before their own eyes.
Even though this is a great age for Disney, you still may have some meltdowns with the younger ones in this age group. The meltdowns will be caused from their normal routines being disrupted just like with the younger group. Parents just need to be prepared for a few upsets with kids this age and make sure that they bring lots of their favorite snacks, juice boxes, and water bottles. Also make sure you know where all the bathrooms are in the parks before going so you don’t have to search for them. Also, make sure that you bring extra clothes just in case of accidents.
Ages 6 To 12
If you’re looking for the ideal ages for Disney, this would be it. By the time they reach this age group most kids actually know what to expect from Disney and they are very excited about the prospect of visiting. They may know kids who have already gone, or they’ve heard about it from TV and other sources and they are informed enough to know that it’s a magical place to visit. Not only are they excited but they also are old enough to help with the planning of the vacation.
By now, they are more than willing to break up their routines because at this age, this is an exciting thing to do, to be able to stay up past bedtime, eat things they don’t always get to eat, and so much more. Because of this going to Disney at this age is a lot easier and can be a lot more fun for the entire family.
The only possible downside to this age group is that some of the older kids in this group are at the age where they realize that everything isn’t real at Disney. For instance, when they might meet Cinderella, they’re excited about it, but they know the girl playing Cinderella really isn’t Cinderella, but they still enjoy it. But at the same time, the scarier rides aren’t going to make them cry like younger kids.
Ages 13 And Older
Some people might say that if you haven’t taken your child to Disney before this age it’s too late. However, that’s just not true because in reality, you are never too old to visit any Disney theme park! No matter what someone might tell you, nearly everyone, including teens will find plenty of fun things including some great rides that will keep them happy. The magic of Disney is very contagious no matter how old you might be, in fact the magic is so contagious it can even make the crankiest of teens smile.
For older kids, you may also want to add a few things to see outside of Disney itself. It’s always a good idea to set aside a day or two to explore what else the city of Orlando has to offer because this is a way to make sure the older kids will enjoy Disney even more. It’s important to remember that the vacation you are planning is their vacation too so make sure to be willing to add a few things they might want to see other than Disney.
Final Note
The more that you allow the older children in your family to contribute to the planning of your trip to Disney World, the more willing the teens in your family are going to be to accept a longer stay at the various Disney theme parks. Consider breaking up the days you plan to visit Disney with some non-Disney adventures for the older kids in the family. The more planned out and the more you listen to the older children in the family the more enjoyable your entire family vacation is going to be.
